What is Eyelash Thinning?

Eyelash thinning, also known as hypotrichosis. It is a disorder in which the eyelashes become shorter, thinner, and less thick. Eyelashes thinning can be caused by a variety of factors, including hormonal changes, medical disorders, and drugs.

In some cases, eyelash thinning is a normal component of the aging process.

What are the Causes of Eyelash Thinning?

Hormonal changes, particularly after menopause, are one of the most common causes of thin eyelashes in women. Hormones can disrupt the growth cycle of eyelashes, causing thinning or loss. Eyelash thinning can be caused by medical illnesses such as alopecia or thyroid issues. Furthermore, some treatments, such as chemotherapy drugs, can cause eyelashes to fall off or thin. Eyelash thinning can also be caused by certain lifestyle factors such as poor nutrition, stress, or excessive use of makeup or eyelash curlers. In most situations, eyelash thinning is transitory, and the lashes will regrow after the underlying problem is addressed.

Diagnose of Eyelash Thinning:

A physical examination by a healthcare provider is usually the first step in diagnosing eyelash thinning. During the test, the provider will look for evidence of thinning, loss, or other abnormalities in the eyelashes and eyelids. They may also enquire about any symptoms you are having, such as itching or redness, as well as any other medications you are taking or medical illnesses you have been diagnosed with.

To help identify the underlying reason for the eyelash thinning, the healthcare provider may also perform another test. These tests may include the following:

Blood tests: to check for thyroid issues or other underlying illnesses.

A skin scrape or hair pull test: To look for evidence of an infection or other condition affecting the hair follicles.

A pull test: is when a small number of lashes are gently pulled out to examine their health and strength.

A skin biopsy: to examine for skin illnesses that can impact the eyelashes, such as eczema or psoriasis.

A Staphylococcus culture: to test for bacterial infection.
